About this event

Join MineralsEd and Teck Resources' Cody Wakeford (Change Management Lead on the Autonomous Haulage Project) for a tour of Elkview Coal Mine.

Elkview operations are located approximately three kilometeres east of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia. Elkview produces steelmaking coal that is exported by sea to the Asia-Pacific region and other parts of the world. The mine employs over 1000 people from Sparwood and the surrounding areas and is the first mountain top mine to go autonomous!

This full-day field trip will include coach bus transportation to the site and The visit will include an overview presentation on the history of Elkview operations, plus a drive by the heavy duty shop, overviews of the plant and processing, and visits to two viewpoints overlooking the mine. Glimpse the future of mining and learn first-hand about autonomous vehicles, cutting edge technology, the milling process, waste rock disposal, markets, and the mine’s economic impact on the region.

Schedule:

  • 7:00 am: Depart from The Kimberley Visitor Centre (270 Kimberley Ave, Kimberley, BC, V1A 0A3)
  • 7:30 am: Pickup in Cranbrook (location TBD)
  • 8:30 am: Pickup in Fernie (location TBD)
  • 9:00 am: Arrive at Sparwood
  • ~1:00 pm: Depart Sparwood
  • ~ 3:00 pm: Arrive back in Kimberley, dropping off in Cranbrook and Fernie as needed

Teachers are required to provide their own transportation to/from bus departure location.

Bring your own snacks and water. Lunch is provided.  The tour is partly outdoors. Dress prepared for fall (cool, wet) weather. Wear dark pants and shoes as they may get dirty.

Our main roles are to support teachers in their development of classroom materials related to minerals, mining and geoscience, and to deliver workshops, field trips and other mineral-relevant learning opportunities for teachers and students.
